If Rewriting, Replace

When you're repurposing old copy, always remember to check that the facts and figures you copy over are still valid.

It's a lesson town officials in Chelsea, Maine, will try to remember next year.

That's because, when copying the current fiscal year's requirements over to a spending plan for next year, they forgot to replace the current year's figures. Since the error was not caught until the bill had passed, the town's finances are now limited.

The result is an $11,626 gap.

Selectman Mike Pushard expects the town to be able to cover the shortfall, but Town Manager Scott Tilton says doing so may include freezing salaries and deferring building maintenance -- neither of which seems optimal.
